The protein encoded by this gene is a core subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (complex I). Mammalian mitochondrial complex I is composed of at least 43 different subunits, 7 of which are encoded by the mitochondrial genome, and the rest are the products of nuclear genes. The iron-sulfur protein fraction of complex I is made up of 7 subunits, including this gene product. Complex I catalyzes the NADH oxidation with concomitant ubiquinone reduction and proton ejection out of the mitochondria. Mutations in this gene are associated with mitochondrial complex I deficiency. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.

The protein encoded by this gene is a vesicle-bound, sodium-dependent phosphate transporter that is specifically expressed in the neuron-rich regions of the brain. It is preferentially associated with the membranes of synaptic vesicles and functions in glutamate transport. The protein shares 82% identity with the differentiation-associated Na-dependent inorganic phosphate cotransporter and they appear to form a distinct class within the Na+/Pi cotransporter family.

Goats were immunized with highly purified mouse IgG2c and the resulting antiserum was collected. Antibody was solid phase adsorbed using mouse IgG1, IgG2a, IgG2b and IgG3 immunosorbents to remove cross reactive antibody. Specific antibody was immunoaffinity purified off a mouse IgG2c containing immunosorbent. Antibody concentration was determined using an absorbance at 280 nm: 1.4 equals 1.0 mg of IgG. This antibody will react with mouse IgG2c as determined by ELISA and IEP techniques and has less than 1% cross reactivity with mouse IgG1, IgG2b and IgG3. It is suitable for blotting, ELISA and IHC applications. This antibody may cross-react with IgG from other species. Optimal working dilutions should be determined experimentally by the investigator.
